Sailor Entry - Online Applications for Enrolment as Sailors for Artificer Apprentice (AA) & Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) Feb 2020 Batches

Here is good news for the Indian Navy aspirants (male) who want to join the Navy and serve the nation. Indian Navy has recently released a notification regarding the recruitment of candidates for the post of Sailors for AA and SSR in the Feb 2020 Batch. The number of vacancies in AA is 500 while in SSR, it is 2200 (approx). As per the notification, the start date of Online Application is 28 June 2019 and the last date is 10 July 2019. Here, we have explained where and how you can fill the online application form, educational qualification, required eligibility criteria, and other details.

Eligibility Criteria for Exam:


  • Sailor AA: Senior Secondary (10+2) with a minimum of 60% marks in Physics and Maths along with one of the following subjects: Biology / Computer Science / Chemistry from a Government recognized Board.
  • Sailor SSR: Senior Secondary (10+2) qualified with Physics and Maths along with one of the following subjects: Biology / Computer Science / Chemistry from a Government recognized Board.

Age Limit:

Candidate must not be born before 01 Feb 2000 and after 31 Jan 2003. That is 16 to 19 years.

Exam Pattern- Computer Based Test (CBT):

  • The examination will be conducted on computers and not pen-paper.
  • A common exam will be held for both AA and SSR.
  • The exam will consist of 100 questions each carrying 1 Mark.
  • The exam will be bilingual, that is, in Hindi and English Both.
  • The question paper will be multiple-choice type and divided into 4 parts- General Knowledge, Science, Maths, and English.
  • The exam will be based on 10+2 syllabus standards.
  • Duration of the examination is 1 Hour.
  • The candidates have to pass all the 4 parts in the examination. The aggregate passing marks in all the sections will be decided by the Indian Navy.
  • There is a penalty of ¼ (i.e. 0.25) mark for each given wrong answer. No penalty for the questions left unanswered.
The candidates who will qualify the CBT as per merit will have to go through a Physical Fitness Test.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT):

  • This is mandatory for all candidates to qualify in PFT.
  • The PFT will consist of a 1.6 km run to be completed within 7 minutes followed by 20 squats (uthak-baithak) and then 10 push-ups. So, start preparing now.
After qualifying the PFT, candidates will go through some Medical checkups to test required medical standards.

Medical Standards and Test:

  • Authorized military doctors will conduct the medical test as per the required medical standards.
  • Height: Minimum 157 cms (5.15 feet).
  • Weight and chest should be balanced with your height. Minimum chest expansion of 5 cms is also required. Further details regarding minimum height and weight are available at the official website of Indian Navy.
  • The candidate must not have any kind of body defect, mental or physical, which can interfere in the candidates’ duties ever in his life as per Navy Order (Special) 01/2008.
  • The medical exam will be held at two levels Prelims and Mains. The candidate is desired to pass both the exams and the final exam only in some specific conditions. The final or main medical examination will be held at INS Chilka.
  • The qualified candidates will be enrolled in the Indian Navy while the medically fit candidates can file an appeal against its finding within 21 days. And then try to eliminate their medical error, if possible and reappear for the medical examination.
  • Indian Navy has advised the candidates to remove the ear wax and tartar from the teeth before appearing in the medical examination.

  • Permanent tattoos on the body are only allowed on the inner side of forearms in such a way that they should not be visible by a person standing in front of you.
  • Permanent Body tattoos on body parts visible to a person standing in front of you are not allowed and the candidate will be debarred immediately.

Examination Fees:

  • Candidates are required to pay Examination fees of Rs. 250/- only via online payment methods using Credit/Debit Cards.
  • Only SC/ST candidates are exempted from paying the examination fees.
  • Admit Card will be issued only when the candidate has paid the examination fees within the last date.

How to apply:

  • Visit and then go to Apply Online.
  • Log in with your username and password. If you are not registered then create your account first.
  • Keep your matric and Senior secondary certificates with you while feeling up the form.
  • After logging in, go to Current Opportunities and click on the given “Apply” Button.
  • Now, fill the application form with the required details carefully. Go through your application form before submitting it finally.
  • Upload the required documents like photo, signature, etc.
  • Now click on the “Submit” button below the application form.
  • Now pay the examination fees and download your application form.

Pay and Allowances:

If you are enrolled in the Navy as a Sailor then you will be paid Rs. 14,600/- during the initial training time per month. After completion of the training, candidates will be recruited on their posts and will be paid in Level 3 of the Defense Pay Matrix that is between Rs 21,700 and Rs 69,100. Alongside, MSP of Rs. 5200/- and DA will also be paid to the candidate as applicable.


The candidates will be promoted to the higher ranks on the basis of their performance and work. The candidates can be promoted to the highest rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I. To get promotion above it, you are required to qualify some preferred exams and educational eligibility criteria. The rank of Master Chief Petty Officer is paid as per the Level 8 of the Defense Pay Matrix that is Rs 47,600 to Rs 1,51,000/- Plus MSP and DA.

How can I join Indian Navy after 12th?

1.Naval Academy Entrance Exam: Every year UPSC conducts these entrance exams for those male candidates twice in a year during May & December who have cleared 12th with Maths & Physics from a recognized govt and state education board. Their age should be between 16 ½ and 19 years.

2.10+2 B. Tech. Cadet Entry: Those students who have cleared 12th or equivalent exam from a govt recognized board or University with minimum 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Maths and at least 50% marks in Class X or XII. You can apply for this through the official Indian Navy.

What is the recruitment process/Selection process of Indian Navy SSR?
A - Indian Navy discharges the ad for enlistment of Indian Navy SSR twice in a year - Dec/Jan and June/July. The application structures can be found on the official site when soon as a commercial is out. The candidate needs to make reference to that he is applying for SSR post by obligatorily ticking that area. Fill the application structure in capital letters and fix the photo as taught.
