Lockdown Effect: Water quality of Brahmaputra, other rivers improves

GUWAHATI, April 28: The water quality of the Brahmaputra andmost of the State rivers has shown modest improvement during the lockdownov.er COVID-19 pandemic. However, the city's Bharalu river did not reveal significant changes with the value of 'dis-solved oxygen' (DO) and 'bio-chemical oxygen demand' (30D) remaining the same during the lockdown and be-fore it, according to a study con-ducted by the Fbllution Control.

Board, Assam (PCBA). "The dissolved oxygen val-ue which indicates the amount of oxygen in the water body is observed to be slightly high-er during the lockdown peri-od, except in few locations when compared with the preceding data," PCBA's senior environmental scientist Mridul. Dev Adhikary told The Assam •ibtme. The value of biochemical oxygen demand was found to be marginally lower than the previous record of data, indieating lesser pollution load. BOD is the amount of clissolved oxygen needed by aerobic bio-logical organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample.
